A look back at the first generation Golf/GTI

In light of the Golf 7 and GTI 7 being recently announced at the New York International Auto Show, I thought it would be fun to take you on a drive down memory lane and reminisce over the last six generations of Volkswagen Golf and GTI models that have helped the hatchback become the best-selling car in Volkswagen’s lineup worldwide. Let’s start from the very beginning….

The Golf Mk1 was first introduced to the US market in 1975 as the Rabbit. Sculpted by well-known designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, this model was the smallest of all the Golf generations, down to its 13-inch wheels. The Rabbit had a 1.5-liter engine that packed a mighty 70 horsepower. And for our current Golf TDI fanatics, the diesel powertrain premiered in the 1978 Rabbit and featured a 1.5-liter engine pumping out an assertive 48 horsepower. The model was manufactured in Westmoreland, PA beginning in 1978.

In 1983, the GTI Mk1 was introduced to the US market as the Rabbit GTI, manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany, where it’s still built today. What made the GTI identifiable on the road were its squared front end styling and alloy snowflake wheels. From the driver’s seat, the performance model was distinguished by its 1.8-liter, 90hp 4-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Lastly, this first generation GTI started the plaid seats trend that is still desired today and will be featured on the upcoming GTI 7.

Discussion point: The first generation had less horsepower than later generations but also weighs less. Features aside, do you prefer more power or less weight?
