What’s so great about owning a Volkswagen? Let us count the ways.

There’s a reason they call it the “people’s car”—because people absolutely love owning a Volkswagen. It’s why more than 5 million folks around the world bought a new Volkswagen last year—a record, by the way [1]. So exactly why does owning a Volkswagen rock? We can think of a hundred reasons—from the terrific Big Game ads to the literally rocking available Fender® sound system and new partnership with Rolling Stone to the tricked-out rides—but here are our top seven

1. VW Has Its Eye on the Future with Fuel-Efficient Cars
Over the next five years, Volkswagen will spend 62.4 billion Euro—that’s more than $80 billion—to develop some of the most technically advanced cars and SUVs in the industry. Much of that investment—one of the largest in Volkswagen history—is going to focus on developing eco-conscious vehicles with the Think Blue® mantras of efficiency and sustainability in mind, including hybrid, diesel, and electric cars.

But Volkswagen owners are already feeling the love in their wallet: “I love our 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI for the savings in fuel costs [2],” says owner Lew Wiezorek of Montgomery, Illinois. “My wife and I were spending over $600 a month in gas on her previous vehicle. We spend maybe $170-190 a month now in diesel fuel. The savings alone is almost making our car payment!”

Danny Hurt of Nottingham, United Kingdom, who owns a 2001 VW Polo adds: “The thing I love about owning a VW is how proud it makes you feel inside, and the longer I have my VW the more impressive it gets—even in its 10th year!”

Our TDI Clean Diesel models get great MPGs, but there’s always room for improvement. We’ve partnered with Amyris & Solazyme to evaluate emissions reductions and demonstrate how TDI technology can perform when powered by advanced biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel.

t’s no secret that we love driving. You’ll note, however, that we didn’t say, “We love stopping to refuel.”  We’re always looking for ways to go longer between fill-ups to maximize your driving enjoyment and our TDI® Clean Diesel technology helps you do just that, but we know that even something as groundbreaking as TDI can be improved upon. Since three heads are better than one, Volkswagen has partnered with Amyris and Solazyme,  two of the world’s leaders in renewable fuels. We’ll work with them to evaluate emissions reductions and demonstrate how well TDI technology can perform when powered by advanced biodiesel and renewable diesel fuel.

International jury gives prestigious award to Volkswagen’s city car.
New York, NY -  The up! has been named “World Car of the Year” by a jury of 66 top journalists from 25 countries today at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. The Volkswagen up! city car was selected out of three finalists to secure the internationally recognized prize.

“This award shows once again that in the up!, our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

Since its launch in December, the up! has been making waves. Within just a short time of its launch last December, it topped new vehicle registrations in Germany and consumer protection organization Euro NCAP awarded the city car a top score of five points and the “Advanced Award” for its city emergency braking system. The up! has garnered other accolades, including the “iF design award in Gold,” the “2011 Goldene Lenkrad” (Golden Steering Wheel) and three awards from British motoring magazine “What Car?”: “Car of the Year”, “City Car 2012” and the “Safety Award.”

On a minimal footprint (3.54 m long) the up! provides plenty of space for four people, as well as the debut of a new generation of three-cylinder gasoline engines. They deliver 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS and are also available with the environmentally friendly BlueMotion Technology.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that two of its vehicles have received top ratings from buyers in Strategic Vision's Total Value Index® (TVI) in addition to the Volkswagen brand being recognized as the best in Total Value. Volkswagen's Jetta SportWagen received top honors in the medium multi-function category with the Volkswagen CC named as the number one larger car.

“The way you become a Value leader in this economy is to create an exceptional product that is also affordable. Volkswagen has done just that by delivering vehicles like the Jetta SportWagen and the Volkswagen CC that fit into our economic structure with the engineering and performance that make the purchase so very desirable,” says Dr. Darrel Edwards, Founder and Executive Director of Strategic Vision.

Strategic Vision’s TVI calculates a number of important vehicle attributes like great fuel economy, price, reliability, and resale value along with innovation that is impactful and intuitive to owners’ expressed vehicle needs.

“Volkswagen is proud to be named the number one brand by Strategic Vision’s Total Value Index, and to have two of our top vehicles honored with best-in-class ratings by the buyers themselves,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “This honor represents the core values and abilities that set the Volkswagen brand apart, with our technological and design innovation, safety, reliability, and the overall power of our German engineering.”

This distinction marks the latest in a series of honors for Volkswagen from Strategic Vision. The brand has been named the best full-line corporation in Strategic Vision’s Total Quality™ Index four times in the past five years, with several Volkswagen vehicles winning top honors in both the Total Quality and Total Value Indices.

The Strategic Vision Total Value Index was calculated from 68,088 buyers who purchased models during September 2010 to June 2011. The vehicles' Total Value is calculated starting with clear statements that owners make about value, including price, innovation, fuel economy, and more and then incorporates the importance of the variables that make up the entire ownership experience to determine the vehicles' worth compared against the costs involved, also known as the "True Value." The Strategic Vision Total Value Awards® have been presented annually since 1995.
